AUGUST 2005 NAVAL SPACE OUTREACH MESSAGE FROM RDML SEE

Distinguished Naval Seniors and VIPs:

Our August 2005 edition includes updates on imagery dissemination to the fleet (BUZZ-LITE), increased UHF SATCOM channel capacity, a ship-to-ship laser communications test, and the Cooperative Antenna Development Program.

PEO Space Systems As a result of quick action by a PMW-146-led government-industry team the recent losses in UHF SATCOM capacity not only have been reversed---overall capacity has increased.

After the UHF constellation lost fifteen 25-kHz channels and eighteen 5-kHz channels due to a degraded LEASAT payload and failure of one of the oldest UFO satellites, the team, including STRATCOM, NETWARCOM, NAVSOC, Boeing, Aerospace, and Vector Planning and Services, mounted a recovery operation using the re programmable payload on the newest UFO satellite, F-11.

The results were impressive.  Reconfiguration of the remaining constellation produced nineteen additional 25 kHz channels and fourteen additional 5 kHz channels.  The UHF constellation is now operating with four more 25 kHz channels and four fewer 5 KHz channels than were available before the losses occurred.   And, I should add, this restoration with increased capacity came at no additional cost.  Well done to all who played a part in this important effort!
